What is Cruise?
The annual training cruise of the California Maritime Academy serves several important purposes. First, it provides license-track cadets with the opportunity to put into practice the theoretical knowledge they have been taught in the classroom, fulfilling a requirement of supervised "cruise time.” Second, through the annual training cruise Cal Maritime students visit ports which are a vital link to the worldwide maritime industry. Third, students develop and perfect, under the close eye of faculty supervision, a broad range of essential maritime competence--professionalism, effective leadership and communication skills, and the keen appreciation for the chain of command, teamwork, and the responsibility of standing watch.
